The National Liberty Museum honored Stephen and Sandra Sheller as “2017 Heroes of Liberty” at the 18th Annual Glass Auction & Gala held on October 7, 2017 at the Sheraton Philadelphia Downtown Hotel. The Shellers were recognized for their support of the Museum and the community through their nonprofit organizations The Sheller Family Foundation and the Sheller Center for Social Justice.
The Shellers sponsored the “Civilian in Peace/Soldier in War” exhibit at the Philadelphia National Liberty Museum’s “Awards of Valor” gallery. This exhibit is the only exhibit in the state that honors the Pennsylvania National Guard. The National Guard were the unsung heroes of the Iraq war, with more casualties than other branches yet very little recognition.
“We felt that these people needed to be recognized,” Sandy Sheller said about those who serve in the state National Guard.
The Shellers also funded the Museum’s Young Heroes Outreach Program at the Tanner G. Duckrey Elementary School.
“The National Liberty Museum’s Heroes of Liberty Award underscore Steve and Sandy’s dedication to supporting the disadvantaged and underserved. Throughout their lives, the Shellers have been tenacious advocates in working to balance the scales of justice. “ – John Fry, Present of Drexel University
